WORKING IT / Kelley's Crafts

"As a strategy of emancipation, drag once stood up against normative gender conventions. But recently, through the American reality television show 'RuPaul's Drag Race,' drag queens have found their way into the pop-cultural canon and subsequently into the logic by which commercial value is attributed. On TV, the flawless queen represents a measure for femininity, and original and imitation collapse into one.

"Mike Kelley's craft works also evoke ambiguity and blur the boundaries between the genders. Instead of concealing masculinity within femininity, however, he creates a condition in which both exist simultaneously, in which their relation to one another is constantly renegotiated."
